Remote Monitoring & Process Tracking helping Arctic Seaweed to more transparency & efficiency

Tracking system developed in record time. Digitread Connect developed a tracking system for the seaweed and kelp grower Arctic Seaweed to gain better control over production, quality, and stocks.

Arctic Seaweed is known for its innovative solutions for growing algae and seaweed. These have made it possible to become commercially profitable in a high-cost country like Norway.

"We can only produce in sufficient quantities or at a competitive price with an industrialized and automated process. That's why we've worked hard to create an industrial platform for cultivation. At the same time, we have trimmed all production steps to make them more efficient, reduce unnecessary time and cut costs," says Kim Kristensen, CEO of Arctic Seaweed.

Tracking is the key

Since the produced seaweed and kelp can be used as input factors for other foods, the product has very high-quality requirements. It is therefore crucial that the production processes can be reassuringly and adequately tracked:

“We need to be able to trace every product back to the source. In addition, we need to be in control of every single batch that we harvest of kelp and seaweed. In this way, we know which production cycle it went through and whether it was developed according to our protocols. So far, all recorded data such as production location, date, type, water temperature, and the process method used was recorded entirely manually. 

However, this was not very beneficial, primarily if the listings were held on a rainy and windy day at the facility at sea. This can result in lost data or the registrations inaccurate due to human error, ”explains Kim.

Problem solved in no-time

Digitread Connect developed the first version of the tracking system after just a single workshop. “Digitread Connect delivered in lightning speed. It took them just a few days to present us an app that we could test directly on the smartphone - and it worked. I was afraid that such processes would take forever, but it all happened very quickly, ”says Kim with a smile.

Digitread Connect's solution is a finished product adaptable to all types of processes in different industries. "At Arctic Seaweed, we started with a relatively simple solution that we built around QR codes. It's simple, affordable, and tangible. The possibilities for the types of data that we can collect and use in our solution are almost endless. The solution can easily be expanded, and other types of sensor data can be integrated," explains Christoffer Lange, CEO of Digitread Connect.

The “Process Tracker” application is supplied as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and is constantly being improved as more and more companies use it. Both existing and new customers benefit from this. The Process Tracker is available both as a mobile and as a desktop application and can be customized for any industrial process.
