Great added value through simple measures for the Norderwerft

Our Remote Controlling solution is a key to limiting the downtime of compressors

Thanks to the Remote Controlling solution from Digitread Connect, Norderwerft was able to digitize essential processes and thus make them much more secure and efficient. The benefits were immediately apparent.

The Norderwerft was founded in 1875 and belongs to the Lürssen shipyard group. It has several shipyards in Germany. Lürssen primarily builds naval and coast guard ships and some of the most luxurious yachts globally, while Norderwerft does not build ships but specializes in the maintenance of vessels.

A Desire for digitized processes

At the beginning of the project, Norderwerft initially had little experience with digitized processes and increasingly wanted to use them to their advantage.

“The topic of IoT was initially uncharted territory for us. Digitread Connect approached the project with unbelievable enthusiasm, commitment, and entrepreneurship. The developers always answered them patiently if we had any questions, even if we had to ask more often. Although it was about complex technical relationships, the language was not a barrier. It worked wonderfully in English. We had a lot of respect for that at first, ”explains Peter Hansmann, Operations Manager at the shipyard.

Remote controlling for compressors

Digitread Connect's task at the Norderwerft was to extract data from two air compressors and a power converter. The air compressors are required for most of the tools used at the shipyard for maintenance work. But part of the problem was that the compressor shuts down automatically and without warning when it got hot, which brought all maintenance work at the shipyard to a standstill.

Therefore, the shipyard was looking for a solution in which a warning signal was given so that there was enough time to turn on the second compressor before the first compressor was switched off, thus ensuring continuous shipyard operations.

The compressors were already equipped with sensors that measured the temperature, pressure, and load, but the data was only read directly from the compressor. With the help of Digitread Connect, the shipyard can now access the operational data of the compressors via a smartphone with the integrated app.

"This display of the data makes it much easier for us to see at a glance how the system is running. If the pressure is too low or the temperature is too high, an alarm is triggered on the phone. This has proven to be very beneficial because we have more time to react to problems," explains Hansmann.

Successful cooperation

Digitread Connect's goal is to deliver solutions quickly, efficiently, and cheaply to be incorporated into business processes. In this respect, Christoffer Lange, CEO at Digitread Connect, speaks of a "very successful project that wonderfully illustrates how we work."

"The app was intuitive, user-friendly, and visually very appealing. Great pleasure gave us how quickly and agile Digitread Connect could deliver countable results. We initially feared that such projects would take an incalculably long time or would be extremely pricy – which turned out not to be the case. We showed successes quickly, which motivated us to digitize other processes or develop additional features with the developers. The further development of the app also proceeded rapidly. Results were almost delivered in a daily rhythm. We were delighted with the cooperation," concludes Hansmann.
